Julie started teaching at the age of 21 years old! Her career began by teaching students that were on a separate, self- contained, campus for students with severe disabilities. Julie had the honor of being the first educator in NISD to take a group of students from a self-contained, separate campus and move her classroom to a typical elementary school, where she also served as a Special Education Coord. Seven years later Julie became part of a team that was recognized by receiving a Promising Practices award presented by TEA in recognition of inclusionary practices. The program was utilized as a model for schools throughout Texas to replicate. From there Julie became a full time Special Education Coordinator.
After serving NISD for 38 years she retired from the district and two weeks later had the privilege of beginning to work at TX-STAR Speech-Language Services Corp. It is amazing that all of the years put into special education have prepared her for a second career that allows her to continue to service students with disabilities throughout Texas and to work with other disciplines who ensure that every student has what they need to achieve their greatest potential.
